ABOUT THE SCHOOL

Q: What gharana is Upasana?

A: Upasana Performing Arts Center is a Lucknow gharana institution with a selection of Jaipur gharana curriculum.

Q: What is Upasana’s teaching philosophy?
A: We take a secular, inclusive approach to Kathak, exposing students to a wide range of musical and cultural influences. Our co-teaching model ensures diverse instruction and personalized attention.

CLASSES & CURRICULUM​

Q: When are classes offered?
A: All classes are held on Sundays.

 

Q: Do you offer private classes?
A: Not at this time.

Q: Are classes in-person or online?
A: All classes are held in person at our Nashville studio. Occasional informational meetings may be conducted via Zoom.

 

Q: Is Upasana only for Indian women and girls?
A: Not at all! Kathak is for everyone regardless of race, ethnicity, or gender.

CLASS POLICIES

Q: What is the dress code?
A: Youth students must wear:

• White kurta

• Black leggings

• Red dupatta

Adult students can wear any salwar kurta of their choice. Jeans, Western clothing, and smartwatches are not allowed. Hair must be tied back neatly.

Q: Are ghungroos required?

A: Yes, all students must wear ghungroos for each class. Bell count is based on student age. Ghungroos can be purchased here.

• Ages 5–8: 25 bells per ankle 

• Ages 9–12: 50 bells per ankle 

• Ages 13+: 100 bells per ankle 

• All Adults: 100 bells per ankle

Q: What materials should students bring?
A: A dedicated binder following Upasana policy, pencils, and erasers are required for every class.

STUDIO LOGISTICS

Q: How does communication work?
A: Almost all updates are shared via WhatsApp. Families must stay active in group chats and download media promptly.

 

Q: What holidays does Upasana observe?

A: A list of studio holidays and closures will be sent to all students and families prior to the beginning of each school year.​​
