Director's Message

Before I understood the language of Kathak, I felt its rhythm within me. The first sound of a ghungroo, the pulse of tatkar, and the expressive poetry of abhinaya awakened something I could not explain—a sense of belonging, as though each movement was leading me back to my roots. Kathak did not simply become a dance I practiced; it became a part of who I am. Through its intricate rhythms, graceful movements, and timeless stories, I discovered a way to express emotions that words could not always capture. Every step brought me closer to myself and deepened my connection to a tradition I now feel honored to carry forward. Over the years, Kathak has taught me patience, discipline, grace, strength, and quiet perseverance. It has shown me that every movement carries meaning and that mastery is built one step, one beat, and one breath at a time.
My love for Kathak eventually grew beyond my own practice. I felt a deep responsibility to share this beautiful tradition with the next generation and create a space where students could learn its technique and discipline while experiencing its soul. For me, teaching is not about creating perfect dancers. Kathak education is about helping each student discover a sense of confidence, expression, discipline, and joy—offering a connection to their cultural heritage that they can carry wherever life takes them. I hope that when my students hear the first sound of their ghungroos, they feel the same sense of wonder that has guided me throughout my journey. I hope they learn to hear rhythm not only with their ears, but with their hearts.
For years, Kathak has been my teacher, companion, and source of strength. It keeps me connected to my roots, and I am grateful for every teacher, student, and experience that has shaped my path. My greatest desire is that through our school, Kathak becomes more than something our students learn. I hope it becomes something they carry within them.
To every student and family joining us, I welcome you to a place where every step is celebrated, effort acknowledged, and story is waiting to unfold. May this be the beginning of a beautiful journey—one filled with learning, friendship, confidence, and joy. As you enter this Kathak family, may your feet discover rhythm, your eyes learn the art of storytelling, and your heart find its own unique voice. May the song of your ghungroos remind you of your strength, your roots, and the limitless possibilities that unfold when you dance with dedication and love. Together, let us honor the past, embrace the present, and create the future of Kathak—one graceful step at a time.
With love and gratitude,
Sonia Chaudhuri
